The Arrakkal Museum is a museum dedicated to the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala, south India. The Arakkal Museum  is actually a renovated section (office and Durbar hall) of the Palace Complex (“Arakkal Kettu”) of the erstwhile Royal Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala. The heritage of the Arakkal family is of prime importance in the history of Malabar and Kerala.

The Arakkal dynasty is unique and was always headed by the senior most person of the dynasty irrespective of the Gender. The male ruler was popularly known as “Ali Raja” and the female ruler was known as “Arakkal Beevi”.

The museum conserves the precious belongings of the Arakkal royal family such as royal staffs (called Amsavadi), the musical instrument Shehnoy (locally called Cheeni), the old mechanism used as a fan, antique telephones and compass, royal chairs and furniture, ceramic and glass wares, huge wooden boxes for keeping documents and valuables, spears, swords daggers, leather shields, silver and bronze utensils etc. Don’t miss this place during your visit to Kannur.

Even though the 2 century old palace was renovated and looked after by the Government of India, the ownership of the place still lies with the Arakkal Family Trust and not with the Archaeological Survey of India. A nominal entry fee is charged by the Arakkal family trust from visitors to the museum. The government had taken a lot of interest in preserving the heritage of the Arakkal Family thathad played an important role in the history of Malabar.

The exhibits which are show cased in the durbar hall consists of old records, maps and drawings of surveys and many other manuscripts. These records will throw light on the maritime activities of the family, the way they conducted their trade and their relationship with the European colonial powers, who were trying to put a foot in the soil.
