The Peechi Wildlife Sanctuary  established in 1958, is situated about 20kms east of Thrissur. This sanctuary consisting of Palappilli- Nelliyampathi forests spreads over an area of Chimminy wildlife sanctuary.Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary lies within the geographical extremes of latitudes 10026’ N and 100 40’ N longitudes 760 15’ E and 760 28’ N in the Taluk of Thrissur and Thalappilly and in the administrative jurisdiction of Peechi Wild life Division of Northern Wild life Circle, Palakkad. The Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife sanctuary is the second oldest sanctuary in Kerala.The sanctuary comprises of parts of Paravattanimala, machadmala and Bahranipacha mala .The total area of the sanctuary is 125 Sq.km. Till the dawn of 19 th centuary the forest of this sanctuary were under the possession and central of feudal chief called the Naduvachira who owned allegiance to the Raja of cochin. Consequent to the integration of Travancore and Cochin states in June 1949, the whole of the forest of Cochin were constituted into Trichur and Chalakudy Division with Head quarters of Thrissur and Chalakudy, respectively. The Sanctuary was formed by combining portion of Peechi, Pattikkad and Machad Range of Trichur

Forest Cover

Evergreen forests are very sparsely seen in this wildlife sanctuary which is blessed with various kinds of flora. More than 50 different orchids and innumerable rare medicinal plants can also be seen here. Twenty five types of mammals, more than 60 types of birds and 10 types of snakes are found here. Carnivorous animals like leopard, tiger, fox etc and herbivorous animals like elks, deers, barking deers etc are here.

Climate
The climate in Peechi Vazhani wildlife sanctuary is mostly pleasant. During the months of November to January, the temperature of this region varies from 15°C to 20°C. However, during the months of March to April, the temperature rises to about 38°C. This locality receives an annual rain fall of about 3000 mm on the average. The rainy season prevails during the months of June to August.

Best time to visit

The best Time to visit Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is from October to March. During this time, the weather is very pleasant and charming.

How to reach:

By Road: Peechi-Vazhani Sanctuary lies in the catchment areas of Peechi and Vazhani dams in Trichur District. Peechi can be approached from all parts of the country. The headquarters of the sanctuary is 15 km by road from Trissur.

By Air: Kochi is the nearest airport (at a distance of 98 kilometers)

By Rail: The nearest railway station is at Thrissur or Chalakkudy (at a distance of 23 kilometers)
